Because even tho the penalty is decent - 20%, the game was designed for multiplayer and thus did this for a reason - All of the encounters scale to the amount of party members, and this doesn't matter if they are real players, summons, familiars. Maybe 1 at most if you heavily micro manage your xp. I kinda felt this too, but after playing with the toolset and learning more and more about how the game works, having 1 or 2 party members (anything, include familiars imparts the same xp penalty) doesn't actually result in any less levels.
